What is a dead stock?
Dead stock is fabric that has sat unsold long enough that it is unlikely to sell at full price.
It is not a category anyone enters deliberately; it is what remains when nobody is measuring age. Fabric ages out through season, colour and trend, and a roll that was worth full wholesale eighteen months ago may now only move at a markdown.
Because it never appears as a line in the accounts, dead stock is a cost most fabric businesses carry without ever totalling. Ageing inventory by receipt date is the only way it becomes visible early enough to act on.
