What is a greige?
Greige is fabric as it comes off the loom or knitting machine: woven or knitted but not yet dyed, printed or finished.
Also called: grey goods, loom-state fabric.
Greige is bought and held as a raw material, often against forecast rather than orders, because dyeing to order is faster than weaving to order. It is the inventory a converter carries to compress lead times.
Greige yardage shrinks through finishing, so the yards received off the loom and the yards available to sell after processing are different numbers. Systems that do not track both will overstate what is sellable.
